How to introduce allergy foods
Once your child is starting solids at around 6 months and not before 4.5 months, start to introduce the main allergy foods.
The main allergy foods include:
Eggs
Peanut
Tree nuts
Sesame
Wheat
Soy
Shellfish
Seafood
Cow's milk
**Although an allergic reaction can develop from any food.
Introduce one food at a time, this will mean if your child has a reaction, you will be able to identify which food caused the reaction. Introduce the allergy food at a time when your child will be awake for a longer period, as allergic reactions often happen quickly after your child has been exposed however it can take up to 2 hours for a reaction to happen. Therefore, lunchtime is often a good time as your child will be awake for a longer amount of time.
Start by applying a small amount of allergy food to the inside of your child’s mouth. If there is no sign of redness or swelling, you can start to introduce a small amount with their regular meal. Continue to include this food in your child’s regular diet to reduce the chance of allergy occurring later. Allergies are more likely to happen when a person is younger however, they can develop at any time.
If you notcie any signs of allergy stop giving your child the food and book an appoointment ith your GP for an assessment and to work out a plan moving forward.
